Call To Action

People Are Silently Begging To Be Led. Tell Them What To Do And Watch Your Conversion And Sales Soar

Everything… and I mean everything you must do from the moment someone lands on your website or landing page, is move them to the next stage of your conversion system and then the next, and the next… and so on!

If you've created your conversion system correctly (and there's so much information in these articles and in CONVERSIONIZE University to help you with this), then each stage the prospect goes through will be increasing their desire and moving them closer to buying from you.

The key Principle to help move prospects through your conversion system is a 'Call To Action'.

You’d be surprised how many people don’t use a Call To Action across their entire conversion system 9never mind their marketing and advertising).

And when it comes to the sales call or meeting or closing meeting the Call To Action is the process of asking for the order.

There’s a great quote from the sales guru Zig Ziglar.

He said, ‘timid salesmen have skinny kids’. What he was alluding to is people not asking for the order.

I’d extend and update it to ‘timid marketeers, business owners and sales professionals have skinny kids’.

In its very simplest form, the Call To Action is simply telling people what to do next and to take action NOW.

If you want them to call.

Tell them.

If you want them to complete a form. Tell them.

If you want them to place an order.

Tell them.

Just showing your phone number isn’t a call to action.

Just having a form isn’t a call to action.

Like I said, you clearly and simply tell them what you want them to do next.

It’s that simple.

But what you mustn’t do is simply assume people will do what you’re wanting them to do.

People are silently begging to be led.

You can achieve significantly better results by telling people in simple, plain English what you want them to do next.

I appreciate if you’ve never tested this, it can seem hard to believe, but I assure you it makes a huge difference.

The overriding Principle is to make sure you always use Call To Action in everything you’re doing from your website or landing pages right through to getting the sale and onboarding the client, customer or patient.

And there's a science to construction a powerful Call To Action.

Here’s the formula to use and then we’ll go through a couple of examples so you can see it in action…

First, you need to summarize the offer (SO). Reinforce why they should take the action you’re asking them to take.

And second simply tell them what to do next (WTD).

Make sure it’s simple, clear and easy for them to do.

It’s that straightforward.  

To help you grasp this, here are a few examples of great Call To Actions from some of the world's most successful online businesses (there's much to be learned from e-comm businesses)...


This first one is Spotify...

This is the Summarise The Offer part...

Listen without limits. Try 1 month of Premium Individual for free. Only 11.99 per month after. Cancel any time.

That’s a great offer and why they have millions of paying members.

And the button is the What To Do Next part of the formula...

Try free for 1 month.

I’d prefer it if the button text said ‘click here to try FREE for 1 month’.

Maybe they've already tested it, but if not, there's a good chance it would increase memberships (you never know until you test!).

This next example is Netflix.

Once again, a very successful business. As the late great Jim Rohn said, ‘Success Leaves Clues’.

And look how great their offer is and how clear it is…

This is the Summarise The Offer part...

Unlimited films, TV programmes and more. Watch anywhere. Cancel at any time.

…and this is the What To Do Next element...

Ready to watch? Enter your email to create or restart your membership.

...and concludes with a stand out button, with the words ,'Get Started'.

That’s very clear and you know exactly what to do to get the offer.

And this last example is from Amazon for their Amazon Prime account.

Most of us have Prime.

I’ve had it for a long time and it really is a great package and offer...

Here’s the Summary Of The Offer...

We're giving you 30 days of the fastest deliveries and the best TV shows for FREE.

Unlimited delivery, award-winning TV shows, exclusive deals and more.

Amazon Prime is just £8.99/month.

...and here’s the What To Do Next part...

TRY PRIME.

Just as a side story, Jeff Bezos created Amazon Prime after speaking to Jim Sinegal who co-created Costco with Jeff Brotman.

If you’re not familiar with the model, to be a customer of Costco you have to be a member.

You typically pay a low annual membership fee. And it was this model that Bezos swiped for Prime ('success leaves clues')… and as they say, the rest is history.

Hopefully you can now see the importance of using a Call To Action to move people along your conversion system.
