The 3 Types Of Lead 'Channel Categories' And Using Them To Instantly Improve Conversion

This area of conversion is HUGE.

This is where we see most businesses making mistakes that are significantly jeopardising their conversion every day without them even knowing it.

It's all around HOW each lead is handled once it's generated.

The good news is there are only 3 ways in which leads come into a business (we call them 'Lead Channel Categories')...

  • AUTOMATED

  • PERSONAL

  • REACTIVE

Every type of lead that flows into a business can be placed inside one (only one) of these Channel Categories.

Understanding where each lead type fits is critical because it determines how your business handles them.

The fact that there are only 3 Chanel Categories makes this process easier for you.

It’s very easy to get this all wrong and ruin any chance you have of optimizing your sales.

This stage of conversion is one of the most critical yet very easy to get wrong and unchecked it can ruin your business. In fact, as you can see below, 'Lead Generated' is the second stage of CONVERSIONIZE because it's so important...

Clearly, every business is different when it comes to the type of leads that flow into a business, but use the table above to put them into the relevant Channel Category.

Then, and most importantly you're going to use the conversion Principle of 'SPEED' to handle EVERY lead.

Let's take a look at each Channel Category and how to handle the leads in each of them...

Automated

‘Automated’ means the lead comes into the business automatically and without human or AI intervention.

In truth, if you require at least one call or meeting (virtual or in-person) you must have this Channel Category in your business.

It includes having an online calendar booking system (such as Calendly, OnceHub and Zoom Scheduler).

This is especially useful if your prospects are already highly targeted because of the marketing tactics you use, and you don’t need much qualification before a meeting is booked. Or like us, you add in a two-step meeting process where the first meeting is used to qualify the lead.

What you don’t want is to put in additional steps so the meeting has to be booked manually. This reduces speed and your aim is always to increase speed!

Personal

The next Channel Category is ‘Personal’.

Lead types that fit into this Category are ones where there is an instant conversation that takes place between the prospect and the business.

In other words, the prospect has taken action and contacted you directly.

So a prospect can make an inbound call to your office or store or mobile number.

They can start a conversation on your online chat or they walk into your office or store.

BUT…

Due to the nature of this Category, there is always a time gap between the inbound action taken by the prospect and how long it takes you or your team to deal with it.

For example, if a prospect is making an inbound phone call, you must ensure the call is answered within 4 rings.

If your phone just rings out (reducing speed and increasing the 'speed gap'), then you’ll lose that lead.

If someone walks into your office or store and no one comes to greet them, then they’ll walk out.

If someone types into your chat and no one replies they’ll hit the back button.

This is where Speed plays a huge role.

Every second counts.

The longer the time gap, the lower your conversions will be. It’s a simple as that.

So you have to make sure you have procedures in place to be world-class in terms of the speed in dealing with Personal Category Channels.

For example, if you aren’t able to answer calls promptly, then you must outsource this function to a call handling service and make sure they adhere to what I’m telling you about speed.

If calls are coming into the office 24/7 then you should use a call handling service that’s 24/7 or you staff your own phones 24/7.

And as long as you nail the Speed element of personal category channels then the great thing is you are immediately having a conversation with the prospect.

Reactive

The final Channel Category is ‘Reactive’.

Lead types that fit into this Category are when a prospect takes an action where no human interaction takes place or is expected to take place.

Examples of Reactive Categories are voicemail, email, lead forms, LinkedIn InMail, SMS or text messages and any other channels where direct messaging is available such as Facebook and WhatsApp.

This is the Channel Category that doesn’t have any Speed automatically built into it.

In other words, the ‘Automated’ and ‘Personal’ Categories are handled immediately as long as the Time Gap is managed effectively, whereas with the ‘Reactive’ category someone in your organisation needs to respond to the prospect and that’s where it can go horribly wrong when it comes to Speed.

The same rules apply.

Every second counts.

The longer the Time Gap between the lead coming in and dealing with it, the less chance you will have of converting it.


You can’t always avoid using Reactive channels (nor would you want to, because they will increase lead flow), so your goal is to have procedures in place that ensure rapid response.
